Oryx Global Partners (Oryx), the investment firm dedicated to facilitating the energy transition and securing supply chains through strategic investments in the minerals value chain, is pleased to announce the appointment of renowned mining leaders Laura Tyler as Partner and Elizabeth Gaines as Senior Advisor.
Laura Tyler
Laura joins Oryx as a Partner and investment committee member, bringing over 35 years of senior leadership experience in the mining industry.
Her experience includes numerous high-profile executive roles at BHP, the world’s largest mining company, including Chief Technical Officer, member of BHP Investment Review Committee, Lead Executive for the Board Sustainability Committee, Chief Geoscientist and Asset President for Olympic Dam and Cannington mines. At BHP, she led a global team of 5,000 professionals responsible for exploration, resource management, maintenance, engineering, projects, value engineering, innovation and technology. Laura is also currently CEO of Adriatic Metals and has previously held various operational and technical roles at Western Mining Corporation, Newcrest Mining, and Mt Isa Mines, amongst others.
Laura’s outstanding contributions to the mining sector have earned her prestigious accolades, including the Institute Medal from AusIMM, being named as the inaugural Exceptional Woman in Australian Resources by the MCA, and being twice named in the Top 100 Women in Mining by WIMUK.
Laura holds a Master of Science in Mining Engineering from the Camborne School of Mines and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geology from Cardiff University. She is also a Fellow AusIMM Chartered Professional.
Elizabeth Gaines
Elizabeth joins Oryx as Senior Advisor. She is a highly experienced international business leader and brings over 30 years of executive and non-executive experience across diverse industries.
She currently serves as Executive Director and Global Green Ambassador for Fortescue Metals Group, the fourth largest iron ore producer in the world, where she previously held the roles of Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director from 2018 to 2022, and Chief Financial Officer prior to that, from 2017. Elizabeth was the first woman to run a major publicly listed Australian mining company, and spearheaded the company’s development during a transformative period, delivering operational excellence, financial turnaround, and simultaneously driving Fortescue’s ambitious decarbonisation agenda.
Elizabeth also currently acts as Non-Executive Director and Deputy Chair at Greatland Gold, Non-Executive Director and Chair at West Coast Eagles and Non-Executive Director at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and has previously held various senior executive and non-executive roles including former Chief Executive Officer of Helloworld and Heytesbury Pty Ltd and Non-Executive Director of Nine Entertainment Co., NEXTDC, Mantra Group and ImpediMed, amongst others.
In recognition of her significant accomplishments, Elizabeth has been honoured with numerous awards, including the joint Australian Business Person of the Year for 2020 by the Australian Financial Review, the Women in Resources Champion for 2020 by the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia, and the second-ranked Businessperson of the Year for 2019 by Fortune Magazine.
Elizabeth holds an Honorary Doctorate of Commerce from Curtin University, a Master of Applied Finance from Macquarie University, and a Bachelor of Commerce from Curtin University. She is also a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
